Riots, violence, strikes, and civil disorder continued to erupt in Germany in April and May. The government’s reliance on various Freikorps units, including those more brutal than General Maercker’s FLJK, often incited left-wing resistance. Professor Jones notes that while the FLJK fought hard against those who challenged the law and order policies of the Weimar government, “its relative bloodlessness is a tribute to Maercker’s own insistence on discipline, and moderation. Unfortunately this attitude was to prove atypical of the general Freikorps mentality.”41

Some of the military discipline insisted upon by General Maercker can be inferred from the following order from Captain Victor Krocker. The order announces that General Maercker would soon review the detachment:

1. All planes [12 LVGs] will be flight ready in front of hangers; the Fokker group in front of the tents. In case of questionable weather, Captain Krocker is to be asked whether or not to prepare the planes.

2. Hangers, tents, and workshops are to be cleaned.

3. Everything in the depots should be stowed in an orderly manner. Accounting books (received and shipped) should be laid out for viewing.

4. Fuel reserves and canisters should be neatly arranged. Fuel and other logbooks should be ready for review.42
